Finding Relief with Lexapro

PrintText SizeSmallMediumLarge

When Can I Expect to Feel Better?

You may start to feel better after taking Lexapro for only 1 or 2 weeks, but the full effect may take 4 to 6 weeks. For the greatest benefit, you should always take Lexapro exactly as prescribed. It's important that you take Lexapro even after relief from symptoms begins. People don't suddenly develop depression or GAD, and likewise, full recovery takes time.

Your health care provider may recommend continuing Lexapro treatment even if your symptoms improve or resolve. You should stay on treatment until your health care provider determines that it's safe for you to stop.

I'm nervous about talking about this with my doctor.

Depression and anxiety are isolating disorders. People often struggle with their condition on their own for many years before they reach out for help. That's why it is important to remember that there are resources available to you. Your partnership with your doctor is one of the most valuable assets you have—use it! Before your next visit to the doctor's office, write down any symptoms you experienced over the course of the last 2 weeks. Describe for your doctor how often and how severely you experienced them. Speaking frankly about them at the start of treatment can only strengthen your relationship with your doctor and lead to faster relief from your symptoms.
